Hiscox Auctioneering
Port Sydney, Ontario
As a child and adolescent I occasionally attended auctions with my family or friends, and was always enthralled by the atmosphere of the crowd, the smell of hotdogs cooking, the rows of cars parked on the shoulder of the roads and of course the auctioneers chant as he mixed humor and numbers to sell every last item on the wagon or in the field. Little did I know at the time, that one day I would hold the title of auctioneer!
In February of 2006 I attended the Canadian Auction College in Barrie Ontario, and I must say it changed my life. I signed up for the course with the goal to perhaps consider auctioneering as a career in the future, or to conduct the occasional Saturday auction, or to help my communitee with fundraising as the need arose. After sitting under the teaching of Barb Richards and Frank Stapleton, I was hooked! Upon returning home from the course I started developing a business plan which I trust will see me working as a full-time auctioneer within the next 3 years if not sooner.
Since graduation I have joined the Auctioneers Association of Ontario, and the Auctioneers Association of Canada. I have also formed my auction company, "Hiscox Auctioneering" which my family has quickly become very active in. My wife Meredith has become my clerk and administrator, and my children Jasimine (13) and Cody (11) are exceptional handlers! Also since graduation I have conducted 3 Fundraiser auctions in the Muskoka's, 1 partial estate\consignment auction, and have 2 more sales booked before September. I am very thankful for the following of supporters who are already regularly attending our auctions.
It is difficult to say what my auction specialty will become, but at this point I am willing to give almost anything a try as long as I feel I can represent the consignor well. I have a solid background in farm animals and machinery, tools, some antiques, furniture, and general personal property.
I look forward to attending the next AAO Convention so that I can meet more of the auction family, and to exchange ideas with them. Who knows, there might even be a place for me in the competition!
