Each year at the convention, the A.A.O. hosts the Ontario Auctioneer Championship Competition. The competition includes an Experienced and a Novice Division and is open to member and non-member auctioneers who are residents of Ontario. Experienced competitors must have more than two years in the auction business, while novice contestants must have two years or less. The competition format includes an opening round for each division in which each competitor normally sells off five (5) items. From this round, the top five (5) auctioneers in each division are chosen, and they then compete in a second round. If there is a tie, a third round is held. Typically, the competition is judged by five (5) judges who are chosen by a Competition Committee. Competitors are scored in categories including: Presentation, Selling Skills, Chant and Employability. The Grand Champion in the Experienced Division is awarded a trophy and gold ring. The Novice Champion is awarded a trophy as well. The Grand Champ’s trophy is sponsored by Ontario Farmer Publications and his/her gold ring is donated by the Woodbridge Advertiser. The Novice Champ’s trophy is sponsored by the Canadian Auction College.
